Who is Kimiko Nishimoto
In Tokyo - Kimiko Nishimoto, has been taking fun, exciting and inspiring photographs for the past 2 decades.
Nishimoto, who goes by @kimiko_nishimoto online, started her journey as a photographer at the age of 72 years old. She debuted her work with a series of "Selfies" that showed the world both her personality and eye for the unusual.
The series, which propelled the photographer to digital stardom gives us, the viewer and interesting look into the world of Nishimoto.
In an interview with Kyodo News in 2017, Nishimoto claimed to have no connection to the "art world" before the age of 72. The transition Nishimoto made into photo-arts began almost on a whim when the housewife decided to take a photography course taught by her own son, and art director, Kazutami Nishimoto.
At the core of Nishimoto's "origin story" is that it's never too late to stumble upon something that you'll love - and that keeping an open mind to new art forms and knowledge can do wonders for our personal creative practices.
Now 95, Nishimoto is a photographer that continuously brings childlike wonder into her photography. When asked about her work during her 2018 showcase in Tokyo, Nishimoto commented:
"I improvise everything. I don't prepare anything and just use stuff that is around to take photos… I just want to take photos that are interesting and funny."
Kimiko Nishimoto's photo series are funny, energetic and refreshingly youthful. Day in and Day out, she does a wonderful job of showing how spontaneous and fun making art can (and should) be.
